Should I turn off 2G on my Android phone?

For most people, yes, if your phone has the option. On 2G the network never proves it's real, so a fake cell tower can pass as one. Turning 2G off stops a fake tower from pushing your phone down to it.

Phones keep older network generations as a fallback when the newer signal is weak. That fallback is the weak spot. From 3G onward the phone and the network check each other, but on 2G only the phone proves who it is.

Fake towers, often called IMSI catchers or Stingrays, can log which phones are nearby, and more capable ones push phones down to 2G where weak or switched-off encryption can let calls and texts be intercepted.
