Challenge: Sharing the Birthday Video

Help Uncle Ray share Grandma's party video with only the family.

A video too big to email

Grandma just turned 80. Uncle Ray filmed the whole party on his phone. The video is about 2 GB.

He wants to send it to the family: Grandma, his two sisters and three cousins. That is six people.

Ray tried to attach it to an email. The email app said the file was too large. Most email services only allow attachments of about 20 to 25 MB. A megabyte, or MB, is about a thousandth of a gigabyte.

Ray's phone already synced the video to OneDrive. It now sits in the OneDrive folder on his laptop too. He asks you what to do next.

Only the family

Ray right-clicks the video and chooses Share. The box shows that the link is set to Anyone with the link.

The video shows the children's faces, and the front of Grandma's house with its number. Ray would not want strangers to see it.

He has the six email addresses ready.

Look, don't change

Next, the Share box asks what the family may do with the video. The choices are Can view and Can edit.

One cousin likes to tidy shared folders. Ray worries she might move or delete the video by accident. Nobody needs to change it. They only want to watch it and save a copy.

Closing the door afterward

A month later, everyone has watched the video. Most of the family saved their own copy.

Ray gets a warning that his laptop is low on space. He wants to keep the video in the cloud, but not on the laptop.

He also wonders about the link. In Manage access, he can choose Stop sharing so the link no longer works.

Remember, deleting a synced file removes it from every device and the cloud.
