Dad's plan for the old desktop

Your dad is selling his old family desktop online. It is about eight years old and runs Windows 11. He bought a new laptop last week and says he copied everything over.

His plan is simple. Delete his folders, empty the Recycle Bin and list the desktop for sale tonight. "Once they're deleted, they're gone," he says.

You open Defragment and Optimize Drives to look at the storage. The Media type column says Hard disk drive. Its spinning platters hold years of tax forms, bank letters and family photos.

You tell him his plan worries you, and explain why.

A missing folder

Before anything gets wiped, you check the new laptop together. The family photos are there. The bank letters are there. But the tax folder is missing.

Your dad thinks for a moment. He forgot that folder, and he may need those forms for years.

The wipe you are about to run can't be undone. Once it finishes, nothing on the old drive will come back.

The switch he hasn't seen

The tax folder is now safe on the new laptop and on a USB drive. Time to clear the old desktop.

Your dad opens Settings > System > Recovery and clicks Reset PC. He chooses Remove everything. Under Change settings, he sees a few switches and isn't sure which one matters before a sale.

A faster idea

The reset is running, and the screen says it may take a while. Your uncle stops by and laughs.

"Why wait hours?" he says. "Just do a quick format. It's done in seconds."

He has a point about speed. But a stranger will own this drive next, so speed is not what matters most. Your dad looks at you to settle it.

Test yourself
