Challenge: The Forum Video Editor
Help your cousin pick a safe video editor instead of a forum link.
Your cousin's plan
Your cousin Jordan is making a video for a friend's birthday. Jordan has a MacBook and wants a fancy video editor that usually costs a lot of money.
A post on a forum says, "Full version, totally free, no trial." A forum is a website where strangers post messages and links. The link downloads a file called ProCut Studio Full Cracked.dmg.
Jordan already tried to open it. The Mac said Apple cannot check the app for malicious software. The only buttons were Done and Move to Trash.
The forum post has instructions for that too. Step one says to go to Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. Step two says, "If it still won't run, turn off SIP. It's harmless."
Jordan asks you, "The video is due Saturday. Can I just do what the post says?"
Reading the warning signs
Jordan isn't convinced. "But lots of people in the forum said it worked for them."
You explain that a cracked app can work normally and still hide something harmful. Changing a paid app breaks the developer's tamper seal. That's why Gatekeeper blocked it, and why the post tells Jordan to get around the check.
You also point at step two. Almost no everyday app needs a core Mac protection turned off. A post that calls this harmless is a big red flag.
Finding a safe editor
Jordan sighs. "Fine. But I still need an editor by Saturday."
You open the Mac App Store together. Apps there go through App Review and run in a sandbox. You find iMovie, Apple's free video editor. It may already be on Jordan's Mac.
You also look up the fancy editor's maker by typing its name yourself, skipping the ads. The real site offers a free trial.
Checking the Mac afterward
Jordan admits one more thing. "I clicked the forum link twice. Is my Mac infected?"
The file never opened, so the risk is low. Still, you help Jordan move the download to the Trash and empty it. You check that macOS is up to date in Software Update.
You also explain the quiet guard that keeps watch for known malware, even between big updates.
Can you answer these?
- What is the best first answer for Jordan?
- Jordan asks what to call a paid app that strangers copied and give away for free. What is the word that starts with p?
- Jordan downloads the free trial from the maker's real site. When opening it, the Mac asks, "downloaded from the internet, are you sure you want to open it?" What does this mean?
- Which built-in Mac antivirus gets new signatures on its own, often daily?
Answer them in the app to earn 120 XP.
