Challenge: A Doorbell for Mom and Dad

Help your parents set up a new video doorbell and camera the safe way.

The box on the kitchen table

Your parents bought a video doorbell for the front door and a camera for the driveway. They ask you to come over on Saturday and help set them up. They want to see who is at the door when they are out, and they want to do it right.

The doorbell has a sticker on the back with a username and password. Dad reads it out: "admin" and "123456". He says, "Great, that's easy to remember. Let's keep it."

Mom has already downloaded the maker's app on her phone. She also wrote the home Wi-Fi password on a sticky note for you.

Before anything else, you want to deal with that password on the sticker. Dad isn't convinced. "Who would ever bother with our little doorbell?" he asks.

Which Wi-Fi

The app asks which Wi-Fi network to join. Your parents' router shows two: "HomeNet" for their laptops and phones, and "HomeNet Guests", their guest network. You checked earlier that guests on it can't reach the main network.

Dad does his banking on the laptop in the den. Mom keeps family photos and tax papers on her computer. Both of those are on "HomeNet". The doorbell and camera will run all day, every day, and you know cheap gadgets often get few updates.

Dad and the updates

The app offers automatic updates and two-step verification. Dad groans. "I always tap 'later' on updates. And I don't want codes on my phone."

Mom reminds him that a stranger once tried to break into her email. Dad agrees to turn on whatever you think is most important. You look at the list of options in the app and pick two.

Where it points, where it saves

Last step. Mom asks two questions. First, will a burglar be able to take the video by stealing the camera? Second, can the driveway camera also cover the neighbor's front window, "just in case"?

The app lets you choose where video is saved: a memory card in the camera, or the maker's cloud. Your parents are happy to pay the small monthly fee if it helps.

Test yourself

Can you answer these?

  1. What should you do with the password on the sticker?
  2. Which kind of network should the doorbell and camera join, so a hijacked gadget can't reach Dad's laptop? (one word)
  3. Which pair of settings should you turn on for your parents?
  4. What is the best advice for Mom?

Answer them in the app to earn 100 XP (Pro).
