Three steps that fix most problems

When something goes wrong on a computer, it is easy to feel rushed. A calm routine helps. Use the same few steps every time, in the same order.

Troubleshooting means finding the cause of a problem step by step, then fixing it.

Step 1: Ask what changed. Problems often start right after something new. Think back over the last few days.

If the trouble began right after one of these, that change is your first suspect. You may be able to undo it, for example by uninstalling the new app.

Step 2: Restart. Click Start, then the power button, then Restart. A restart closes every app and starts Windows fresh. It clears many small glitches. Choose Restart rather than Shut down. Many PCs use a quick start feature, so Shut down does not always reset everything.

Step 3: Check for updates. An update is a free fix or improvement from Microsoft. Open Settings, choose Windows Update, then click Check for updates. Many known problems are already fixed in a newer update. Install what it finds, and restart if it asks.

The app that is acting up may need an update too. Many apps have their own update option, often in their Settings or Help menu.

Only after these three steps should you try bigger fixes. Small, simple steps first. Big steps last.

On a Mac, the same routine works. Restart from the Apple menu, and check for updates in System Settings, General, Software Update.

Built-in helpers and careful searching

If the simple steps do not fix it, Windows has built-in helpers.

A troubleshooter is a small built-in tool that checks for common problems and tries to fix them for you. Windows 11 has troubleshooters for sound, internet, printers, Bluetooth, the camera and more.

To find them, open Settings, choose System, then Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters. Click Run next to the one that matches your problem.

On current versions of Windows 11, these troubleshooters open in the Get Help app. Get Help is Microsoft's own support app. You can also open it from Start and describe your problem in plain words, such as printer not printing. It suggests steps and Microsoft articles.

Searching an error message. If you see an error, write it down exactly, including any code such as 0x80070005. Then search for it, and be careful where you click.

Write down what you tried. Keep a short note: what the problem is, when it started, and each step you took with its result. For example, restarted, still no sound. This stops you repeating steps. It also helps a lot if you later ask a friend or a repair shop for help, because they can start where you left off.

Test yourself

Can you answer these?

  1. Your sound stopped working the day after you installed new headphone software. What is the best first suspect?
  2. A pop-up shows an error and a phone number for Microsoft Support. What should you do?

Answer them in the app to earn 50 XP.
