Updates close the holes

An update is a free fix that the maker sends to your computer. Some updates add new features. The most important ones fix safety problems.

Every program has small mistakes in it. Some mistakes let a criminal sneak in. These weak spots are called security holes. When the maker finds one, they send an update that closes it.

Here is the catch. Once a fix comes out, criminals learn about the hole too. Computers that skip the update stay open. So updating soon is one of the best things you can do.

On Windows, updates come through Windows Update. To check for them:

  1. Open the Start menu and click Settings.
  2. Click Windows Update on the left.
  3. Click Check for updates.

Many updates only finish after a restart. A restart turns the computer off and back on. Windows may show a Restart now button. Save your work first, then click it.

Windows also has a safety app called Windows Security. It can scan your computer for harmful programs. A real scan never asks for money or shows a phone number.

On the practice computer, check for updates, install them and restart. Then open Windows Security, run a quick scan and look at what the real app shows.

Let updates happen on their own

You don't have to remember to check every day. Your computer can get updates by itself. These are called automatic updates.

Windows 11 turns automatic updates on for you. It downloads updates in the background. Then it asks you to restart, or it picks a time when you're not using the computer.

A few good habits help:

An update can take a few minutes, sometimes longer. That is normal. Let it finish.

On a Mac, updates come from Software Update. Click the Apple menu in the top left corner. Choose System Settings, then General, then Software Update. You can turn on automatic updates there too.

Your apps need updates as well. Your web browser usually updates itself. You may just need to close it and open it again. Apps from the Microsoft Store or the App Store update through the store.
