Is it safe to delete temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin?
Yes, for the most part. Temporary files are leftovers that apps and Windows no longer need, and Windows can remove them safely for you. Emptying the Recycle Bin is safe too, as long as you check first, because files deleted from there are much harder to get back.
The safest way is to let Windows do it. In Settings, then System, then Storage, Cleanup recommendations lists temporary files, large files you haven't opened in a while and apps you rarely use. Storage Sense can clean temporary files automatically and empty old items from the Recycle Bin on a schedule you choose.
Be careful with two things. Don't delete files from the Windows folder or other system folders by hand. And look over the Downloads folder before clearing it, since people often keep the only copy of something important there. Storage Sense only cleans Downloads if you turn that option on.
- Open Settings, then System, then Storage
- Select Cleanup recommendations and tick only what you're sure about
- Turn on Storage Sense to keep temporary files tidy automatically
- Open the Recycle Bin and look through it before you empty it
